William Cowper JHS 73, Maspeth, Queens, NY

I hope it is not a sign of encroaching old age, but these days I find myself longing more for the past. First I joined the Facebook group for my high school year. When I came across my junior high group, I joined without a second thought.

When I graduated in 1982 it was called William Cowper JHS 73 but now it is known as Frank Sansivieri Intermediate School 73 or I.S. 73. Wonder how Mr. Cowper feels about it? It was not the first school I attended but it was the one that I actually graduated from. I was fresh off the boat, so to speak, when I spent one day at some school in Brooklyn near the Sheepshead Bay area, which was where my family's sponsor, Uncle P., lived. I think the next day it was decided that we would move to the Bronx soon so there was no point for me to go to school just yet. Even the stay at the Bronx school did not last that long, as by summer we moved to Elmhurst for my father to be close to his job. JHS 73 was a long way from where we lived and I had to go there by public bus, although I remember some days I walked home, either to save the nickel or because the bus was too crowded. Along Grand Avenue I would go, pass some supermarket with a large parking lot where sometimes kids would arrange fights, pass the two Elmhurst tanks that are now gone, I think, pass Robert's house - Robert would later be a best friend at Newtown but I didn't know him then, even though we were at JHS 73 together - over some LIRR tracks, on to Seaman at the corner of Queens Boulevard and Grand, where Grand becomes Broadway. Soldiering on, I would pass Elmhurst Library, turn at Corona Avenue, pass Newtown, then turned left to go over some other LIRR tracks. I think I would keep going straight to Elmhurst Avenue then turned right and go for a few more blocks to get home. The whole trip had to take at least an hour, but back in those days I think life was simpler and I had a lot of time to waste.

Having arrived in the U.S. just half a year earlier, naturally I got put into ESL and that was where I met Ms. Madeline Butler. I cannot recall much details but I know she was nice to me, maybe because I tried hard to learn the language and showed improvements. She was very supportive of my efforts. I know one time we went to Rye Playland and I had so much fun playing bumper car - it was my first. The ESL class was next to the gym, on some floor. Good grief, it is almost 30 years ago, I cannot recall much.

Eventually my hard work paid off and I left ESL. I even went on to be admitted to Arista, the honor society, although I don't recall knowing what it meant to be in Arista. I do know we performed Somewhere Over the Rainbow at some ceremony. I did not know about the dress code for the evening and did not arrive with a jacket, not that I had one to bring. Mr. Gotkin let me wear his jacket to get on the stage to receive my Arista certificate. Some memory!

I belong to two Facebook groups related to the school. It is so nice to see all the young faces. After all, these are kids in the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th grades, in their teens. If there is a reunion, I don't think I will go. I didn't know enough people back then and it's been so long. I make exception for those who went on to Newtown High School and kept in touch with me. Still, I look forward to hearing about the teachers.

I too have great memories of Mr. Gotkin (we actually referred to him as Dr. Gotkin) when I attended in the late 1970's , I graduated in 1977. Overall the best school I have ever attended in terms of pupil/teacher relations. graduation day was actually very sad.

Also have great memories of Ms. Patricia Ruddy the principal who almost always wore black and had the darkest office I can ever recall. Understand she passed away a few years ago, she was a tough lady but gave her all to that school.!!

Great memories....... did not know back in 1977 how truly special they were.

I concur. Gotkin was great...one minute he was a fiery manman...the next he's singing Simon & Garfunkel on an acoustic guitar on an impromptu visit to my urban planning class :) Great Gent. Best years of my life. Still in touch with Mr. DiCecio...fantastic man...truly a great human being. Mrs. DeRosa? - she made school worth attending. Mr Mifsud..again...made YOU want to learn...not just attend. The best school and the best memories. We were old enough to have understood a great deal...but young enough to not yet have been tainted by it. Great environment. I graduated in 1983. Lived blocks from the school. Remember the big "trial" of actually letting us kids out of school for lunch to go eat on the avenue??? My god....how liberating that felt :)

When I became a teacher, I subbed at 73 a few times until I began teaching full time. Does anyone remember Jacob Feinman?

Wow! I graduated in 1958. Loved the school. We had an award winning orchestra directed by Mr. Misket. Mr. Ginsberg was the principal. We were taught "social dancing" in gym and then on Wednesday afternoons we could stay and dance with our friends. They were great years.

    1. Hi, I graduated in 1956 and Mr. Misket taught us to sing "June is Busting Out All Over" from Carousel for our graduation..we were so awful, my mom said it sounded like a dirge! I had my memory jogged just yesterday about a wonderful English teacher Mr. Reicher. He was flamboyant, hilarious and absolutely determined to inspire our creativity. Asked us to write compositions with vivid titles like "Midnight in Bombay"! Mr. Goode was Homeroom and I just read he passed in '73. A really nice man. Great memories. Wish I could remember my Art Teacher's name..publishing the year book turned out to be my calling. I eventually wound up in magazine publishing and advertising.
I've been hoping to connect with Connie Kourtland. We were in the SP class which compressed 3 years into 2. I think she went on to Newtown. Good to find this page. Thanks, Nan

    2. P.S.. Back in the 50's there was a little Italian deli and snack store just outside the playground. We all left the grounds illegally of course at lunch to get the best meatball sandwiches. I took 2 buses to school from Middle Village, on the other side of Juniper Valley Park. When I missed the bus (lots!), I walked to school. I just looked up the distance.. It was only 3.3 miles but it felt like 10. especially in the winter, in a skirt. We weren't allowed to wear long pants. Jeans? Don't be crazy, so we stood freezing on the corner waiting for the bus. I remember visiting Connie Kourtland's house in Maspeth and passing through a cemetery to catch a train home. Had to be the longest route. Just reading the google map is so wild, Maurice Avenue! Grand Avenue. Love this blog. Thanks Qaptain.

  4. I graduated in 1968,... Mr Ornstein was the principal & Ms. Ruddy was the assistant principal back then. Our family lived at the Allen Apt. on Elmhurst Ave. The yellow school bus used to stop right in front of our building.
Elmhurst Ave was a two way street back then. I had Mr. Sterling for Social Studies, Mr. Hammer for math, I had woodworking & metal shop were we made useless trinkets. I remember making a wooden boat that listed to one side. Mr. Lake was my shop class teacher. We got to use real tools, it was alot of fun. Mr Henderson was my home room teacher one year. The middle finger on his right hand was always stiff straight so it always looked like he was giving you the finger. All the boys got a kick out of this myself included. My last year I had Norman Corbluth as my home room teacher. He had an identical twin brother teaching in the same school. Mrs. Applebaum was the cool English teacher. I remember on my last year she brought in a record player & played a Bob Dylan LP !!!...Mr Gotkin ran the Talent show. Ms Houston was my Art Teacher. I was in the Soccer team. The Soccer team was made up of a motley crew of foreigners like myself who had arrived in the US just five years earlier from Argentina. My teammates were from Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Spain, Russia, Hungary, Romania & miscellaneous third world countries. That year we did not loose a single match. A few years ago I drove by & was disappointed to see the school playground had been totally taken over by school buidings. Kids should have space to run around & play. I have wonderful memories, it was a wonderful time to be a kid. I still have my yearbook.
Would love to re-conect with my Art Teacher Ms. Houston just to say thank you.

Hi there IS 73 alumni.I went to 73 from 1968-1970, and like you have nothing but wonderful memories of my years there. No other school that I attended ever had the relationships between the students and teachers like those at 73.
I was closest with Mr. Birnbaum, and was crushed when I heard he passed away. I spent all my free time in the supply room, which also served as his office at that time. If it wasn't for his care and guidance, I'd never have passed or cared about Social Studies and never would have graduated 73 or Grover Cleveland HS for that matter. LOL
I'd love to hear from others from the graduating class of 1970. Write me at...camper210@aol.com. Please write IS 73 in the subject line so I know it is safe to open.
    God Bless,Judy McGrath

omg! I graduated 73 in 1979. There was a huge Korean population in the school then - me being one of them. I also went to Newtown HS for a year and moved to NJ. I remember Mr. Gotkin very well as well as Mrs. Bonanno. I remember the school being full of kids from all different ethnic background and the diversity helped everyone to be more accepting of each other. Anyone remember Mr. DeCiceo or Ms. Butler (ESL teacher)?

Frank Sansivieri was a Hygiene and Phys Ed teacher who was killed in a car accident back in 1999 or the early 2000's. it was during the school year, i think during the Dec recess or mid-winter recess. I graduated in 1998,the last or second to last year Ms. Ruddy was principal. Mr. Mifsid took the chair after her. He was the teacher who looked like Mr. Spacely from the cartoon The Jetsons.

Ms.Butler had blond short hair and glasses from what I remembered when I attended.

  22. I graduated in 1987 and although those were tough years filled with many insecurities and teen angst I still wish I could turn back the hands of time and go back to those days. To be honest with you, many of those days are a blur now but I do remember hanging out at Cowboy Pats and having Mr. Spiegal as my dean. I also loved Ms. Kraft who was my SS teacher. I saw her about 9 years ago and had a chance to thank her for being such an inspiration in my career choice; I'm currently teaching 8th grade English as IS 250 in Flushing. Love to hear from anyone here who might remember these folks. Thanks for the memories David Vasquez.

I had Mr. Joseph for 9th grade homeroom and he later became an assistant dean; I had Mr. Slowik for 8th grade science...he was hilarious...also had Mr. Duffy for social studies one year...9th grade we went to the Dude Ranch, cut a hole from one room to another...good times.

Also does anyone know the particulars of his death? I heard that other teachers were also killed in the accident. I want to know if this is true.

  24. Yankeefan4ever,

Glad to hear you got to meet a past teacher (Ms. Kraft) to thank her - teachers in the U.S. do not get appreciated enough, in my opinion.

A Facebook person added this comment about Mr. Sansivieri, "Him and Mr. O'Conner got into an accident around 99 - 00 during the winter recess.." Further back in this Comment thread, someone else provides similar info.

I might visit the school some day during the week and see if there's a portrait of Mr. Sansivieri inside the school hallway or lobby.

Supposedly he passed away from cancer. From the many entries, I only gather that he was an avid car racer, had a Camaro and frequented Watkins Glen. What was his first name and where did he live? With those two pieces of info it may be possible to confirm his death.

Yes Mr. Slowick did pass away from cancer of the lungs, in Sept. 2009; I was a former student of his first class at JHS 73. Bill was also a personal friend of mine. We campaign several formula fords together through the years, raced basically on the East coast and Canada. Prior to the week before his death we spent the day together doing what he like most besides teaching. We rode down to Pocono Raceway and watch an EMRA racing event. He was a great friend and a good teacher.

I lived in Woodside so the bus route was shorter yet the walk seemed very long as well was it our bus (was it the Q-52?) was not as crowded but took forever to get come. I remember having to wait at the office to get my bus pass - the color changed every year. Mr. Gotkin was always dramatic when he got upset, scary even, but what a gentle guy to the students who were in need.

    2. Hi Ms Jacobson! You were my teacher in 80 I think. Kelmar Rosales. Thanks for the hard work. Glad you are well. This whole thing is bringing back some amazing memories. DO you remember Mr Deneke? I dont know if I'm spelling it right. He taught science. If you keep in touch with him tell him I remember him as one of the funniest teachers. Hope you continue to be well and wish you happiness, Kel

I graduated in 1972. Anyone remember Mr. Depaula who taught French, had a very muscular build, had several field trips the the movies & trips to Philadelphia & the submarine base in Conn. They were building an adjoining building strictly for science classes, I got to go there for 8th grade with Miss Bloom. Lived off Elmhurst Ave & Broadway, and I walked many a time when they started the public bus for a nickel.

Wm.Cowper was the first school I attended when my family moved to the US. Everything was so new to me....I forgot the name of the sweet teacher who taught English to a bunch of us newcomers (Mrs Piccola?). Mr. Mazzola was a life saver too.

  45. I graudated in'62 also, with Linda Lizunas. Mr. Gotkin was teaching English then and he was a character. The chorus performed as one of three top JHS's in NYC (I think at Hunter College) and a record (33rpm at that time) was made of it. One music teacher lost her job after playing West Side Story.

Graduated in '62. Memories-Being told on my 1st day on the B-58 that the "Rocks" would steal my brand new, oversized schoolbag & beat me up. Never happened but I kept looking over my shoulder for 3 years.
Mr. Presti, music director. I found him, aside from being an extremely talented musician with a nice operatic tenor voice, to be an egotistical bully who seemed to enjoy switching the boys on a regular basis. You had to say, "Allah be praised" after each nasty stinging blow with the baton. I heard a student decked him the year after I left the program. He did get the band sounding pretty good but the orchestra program was a hilarious failure.
Mr. Herwith (sp???) was teaching english tho he was really a history teacher. Good guy.
Mrs Ackerman for English & home room was a very nice lady. Poor Mr. Dane, we & I guess all the students tended to act up & screw with him until he became red, shaking & rigid with rage. We got chewed out by Mrs. Ackerman for tormenting him. Very very sad about that all these years later. Man people can be cruel. It was students bullying an adult.
I remember quite a few after school fights that lasted actually seconds & as soon as the vanquished "gave" they stopped, shook hands & I think in many cases became friends once the pecking order was determined. What a difference from all the kids killing each other today.
Somewhere I found my yearbook in my dad's possesions when he passed away. Seeing all those faces brought back memories. I was pretty overwhelmed with typical adolescent angst back then but had some good friends that made it easier. I survived to be a geezer now so I guess it wasn't as bad as it felt then.

BTW Bill De'lia, the very sucessful TV producer( Ally McBeal, Boston Legal, Harry's law & many more) & father of Chris De'lia co-star of "Whitney, was a fellow student there. We all called him William. Glad to see at least one of our class made a big mark in the world.

"Billy" D'Elia, as I remember him, also has a son, Matt that's in showbiz. I only remember Billy being called "William" by our English teacher (the very best English teacher EVER), Mrs Akerman. I also had Mr Presti for orchestra. He was a tough teacher, but sure knew his music and taught you things that you'd never forget. I had a lot of respect for him, for then again, I'm not a guy. You and I had a lot of the same teachers and I also graduated in 1962 and rode the B-58 from Elmhurst every day.

The box-ball before classes, the garden, softball games ,auditorium, Crosby Kameny and DR Hazzar, goimg to the boiler room to get ink for the inkwells, terrible Mrs King that denied the existence of the word audio, punching one another in the hall ways. Getting into the classrooms before time. All you had to do was jiggle the knob just right. We would all say that it was open so we came in. Could go on for hours. Great school with great teachers.....Woody

I was class of 64 also. I don't believe I ever had Mr. DePaula, although I remember the name. I was in classes 7-5, 8-5 and 9-5--almost the same kids all 3 years. I'm Doris Seeberger. I had one of the Corbluth brothers for French. I was in his class when his brother came in and told us Kennedy was shot. I lived just down the block from 73 on corner of 69th St. and 54th Ave (main entrance of the school). I've been living in Florida now since 1973. In 1977, in Ft. Lauderdale area, guess who lived in my subdivision? Dr. Ornstein-our principal. Unfortunately I didn't realize it until I read his obit. The school went to 9th grade back then and there was gangs of 15+ kids 6Ft + that couldnt speak or read english. Local school which was over run by the busing of the 1970's ! Was in 7-18 & 8-18 (SP classes)& I spent most of time defending weaker kids in my class aginst getting picked on in the school yard.

  64. HI everyone!

When I attended it was called P.S. 73 that was in the 60's (around 1967-1970). I remember the riots outside of the school entrance due to desegregation and students from Corona being bused into the school.

I was in the SP classes and remember a few teachers, but for some reason can't remember their names.

The science teacher I had was male and he was one of the best teachers I had. He not only supported me in my education, but also encouraged me to continue to advance in science.

I remember the principal and vice principal (not their names). They looked like twins and the principal looked exactly like Groucho Marx.

I remember an art teacher (male) who used to sit in the front of the class high on pot while the students sniffed glue in the back of the class. (not a very smart thing for kids to do)

I remember an English teacher I believe her name was Mrs. Began (sp.) all the students hated her and used to throw books and chairs at her. (she taught remedial reading I believe)

I had to have hip surgery at the end of 8th grade and my mother refused to let me take my end of year exams. The school then put me in "remedial" classes the following year. What a horrible experience to go from SP classes to classes where the students could not read or write.

I remember the girls had to take cooking and sewing classes while the boys took shop classes. I loved these classes but could never understand why there were classes for "only boys" and "only girls".

Sorry for the rambling thought I would have remembered more teacher names. If anyone out there remembers the names of these teachers would be great to be reminded :D

I also remember being allowed to go outside of school at lunch time. We would go to a little store around the corner and buy ham sandwiches for 25 cents each.

  81. I graduated in 1974. Although this should've been a great time in my life I did have great teachers I do remember. My dad also attended this school too which had to be back in the late 40s and I do recall having one of his old teachers I was very proud to have. I couldn't wait to attend here. However, when I was here I got bullied from day one to the point I shut down by the time I got to high school and it carried o er to my adult life. I am very thankful I am here today because the damage it did to me. Do I forgive those who ...yes..will I ever forget..no I just cant because To this day I have trouble talking to people thinking they are taking about me or if I hear laughing in the background I think its about me. So if any of you who remember bullying anyone think about the harm it can cause a person. Yes..simple name calling can lead to permanent scarring.
